Abstract

Literature on Internet of Things applications in oil palm plantations has grown rapidly, yet most publications are prototype reports that emphasize technical success and rarely examine methodological limitations or economic feasibility. This critical review assesses ten recent articles on IoT-based plantation monitoring. Searches across Scopus, ScienceDirect, IEEE Xplore, SpringerLink, and Garuda yielded 96 records, reduced to ten through documented inclusion and exclusion criteria. Each article was analyzed with an extraction sheet and rated by two independent reviewers on clarity of method, adequacy of validation, and representativeness of field conditions. Work clusters into LoRa-based soil monitoring and drone-based aerial sensing, with monitored parameters concentrated on moisture, pH, and temperature while macronutrient parameters that actually drive fertilization decisions remain largely untouched. Method clarity was generally adequate, but validation and field representativeness were weak, with most testing involving fewer than five sensor nodes over less than one month. Four gaps emerged, and economic feasibility was absent from all ten articles.
